Program: Getting Ready to Cross the Pond
Description: “Start with what you know and work back”. Often it is necessary to know what town, city, county or village your ancestors are from in another country. There are many records on this side of the puddle that may reveal that information. This is a discussion of what those records may be and where to find them. After hearing this talk the participant will have a better idea of the plethora of information on this side of the pond before expanding their research to another country.
Speaker: Diane Barbour - Professional Genealogist

February 8, 2018 ~ Meeting and Program

Program:  The Secrets of Elk Creek

Description: Member Bonnie Scudder will discuss the genealogy research that she did in writing her book “The Secrets of Elk Creek”.   MGS member Deborah Darnell will also relate her work with Bonnie on the research they did on the families that owned the property that is now Staunton State Park.An example was learning specific information about the Staunton family. We still are not sure of Dr. Rachael Staunton’s date of birth. Census records do not agree, so I’m still searching. Deborah connected with descendants of John E. Denver (not the singer) who homesteaded 520 acres, which he gave to the Stauntons. It is part of Staunton State Park, now.Bonnie’s book will be available for purchase at the meeting.  The cost is $20.00.
